RayOne Galaxy Spiral IOL – A New Generation of Premium Intraocular Lens

The RayOne Galaxy is one of the newest premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) developed by Rayner. It features an innovative spiral (helical) optic designed using artificial intelligence-assisted optical modelling, offering a different optical approach from traditional diffractive trifocal lenses.

Its goal is to provide high-quality vision across distance, intermediate and functional near ranges while reducing some of the visual disturbances commonly associated with diffractive multifocal lenses.

Because the RayOne Galaxy is not yet widely available in many countries, an increasing number of international patients are specifically travelling abroad to receive this lens.

1. A More Continuous Range of Vision

Traditional trifocal lenses divide light into three distinct focal points for distance, intermediate and near vision.

The RayOne Galaxy uses a unique spiral optic designed to create a more continuous range of focus, allowing smoother transitions between different viewing distances.

Many patients report comfortable vision for:

  • Distance activities such as driving and watching television
  • Intermediate vision, including computer work
  • Functional near tasks such as reading menus, mobile phones and everyday printed material

2. Reduced Halos and Glare

Unlike conventional trifocal lenses, the RayOne Galaxy does not rely on diffractive rings.

As a result, it has been designed to minimise visual phenomena such as:

  • Halos
  • Glare
  • Starbursts

Early clinical studies and patient experience suggest that many patients experience fewer night-time visual disturbances compared with traditional diffractive multifocal lenses.

As with any premium intraocular lens, individual visual outcomes may vary from patient to patient.

3. High Light Efficiency and Excellent Contrast

Traditional diffractive multifocal lenses distribute incoming light among multiple focal points.

The RayOne Galaxy’s non-diffractive spiral optic eliminates this diffractive light splitting.

This design aims to:

  • Improve light efficiency
  • Preserve contrast sensitivity
  • Enhance visual quality, particularly under low-light conditions

Although some marketing materials refer to “100% light transmission” or “zero light loss,” these statements should be interpreted carefully. No optical system is completely free of light loss.

A more accurate description is that the RayOne Galaxy avoids the light splitting associated with diffractive optics, which may contribute to improved visual performance and contrast sensitivity.

4. Greater Spectacle Independence

The RayOne Galaxy is designed to provide excellent vision at:

  • Distance
  • Intermediate
  • Functional near

When appropriately selected, many patients are able to perform most daily activities without glasses.

However, no premium intraocular lens can guarantee complete spectacle independence for every patient. Some individuals may still require reading glasses for very small print or prolonged close work.

5. Toric Option for Astigmatism

The RayOne Galaxy is also available in a Toric version.

This allows cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange to correct pre-existing corneal astigmatism during the same procedure, improving the likelihood of achieving excellent postoperative visual quality.
