Can  Patients Have Cataract Surgery After Eye Color Change Surgery?

This is a question we hear frequently from patients traveling to Turkey for eye color change surgery.

The answer is usually yes.

Planning for the Future

Many patients are in their 30s, 40s, or 50s when they undergo keratopigmentation and naturally wonder what will happen if they develop cataracts later in life.

Fortunately, eye color change surgery does not normally prevent future cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery Remains an Option

If cataracts develop years later, cataract surgery can generally be performed in the usual way.

Depending on the patient’s needs, lens options may include:

• Monofocal lenses
• Toric lenses
• Trifocal lenses
• EDOF lenses

Why Timing Matters

If cataract surgery is planned relatively soon after keratopigmentation, the cornea should first be allowed to stabilize.

Prof. Dr. Mahmut Kaşkaloğlu generally recommends waiting at least three months before performing additional surgical measurements.

The Bottom Line

Eye color change surgery and cataract surgery are not mutually exclusive.
